Activate when: a decision is framed as 'X or not-X' but is really a spectrum; someone says 'we have to choose between A and B' and both seem to have problems; a debate is stuck in ideological purity and 'compromise' is being dismissed as weakness; someone says 'Zhongyong,' 'doctrine of the mean,' 'third way,' or 'the middle path.' Do NOT activate when: the choice is genuinely binary (yes/no, irreversible) and a middle position is incoherent; one side is clearly correct on the evidence and 'balance' would be false equivalence.
